Mandie Bevels Dunn, Ph.D.

Mandie Bevels Dunn, Ph.D., is an associate professor of English education whose scholarship explores how institutional and social conditions shape teachers’ work, well-being, and professional sustainability. Her research examines emotional labor, grief, and teacher experience through qualitative and phenomenological inquiry, including studies focused on educators teaching after pregnancy loss and bereavement.

Dunn is an associate professor of English education at the °µÍøTV. Her scholarship examines how institutional, political, and social conditions shape teachers’ work, emotional labor, well-being, and professional sustainability. Using qualitative and phenomenological methodologies, she studies how educators navigate emotionally demanding experiences while teaching, including grief, caregiving, and personal loss, and how these experiences influence pedagogy, curricular decision-making, and professional retention.

Much of Dunn’s research focuses on how schools and universities can better support educators during periods of profound emotional strain. Her work has examined the experiences of teachers navigating bereavement in the workplace, and she is currently leading a national study centered on U.S.-based K–12 teachers who have taught following pregnancy loss. Across her scholarship, Dunn is interested in building more humane and sustainable approaches to education and academic life.

Her research has been published in leading journals including Reading Research Quarterly, AERA Open, Multicultural Perspectives, and English Teaching: Practice and Critique. Her work also appears in edited collections focused on teacher education, well-being, and qualitative inquiry.

At USF, Dunn teaches undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in English education, teacher education, and qualitative methods, including phenomenology. She is an active member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the American Educational Research Association, and English Language Arts Teacher Educators, where she serves on the executive committee.
