Overview

The Exploratory Curriculum (ECM) is proud to welcome students to the University of South Florida.

ECM is a first-year-only program for students admitted directly from high school.  In this program, USF students may register for up to 36 credit hours (including those accumulated in high school through programs like AP, IB, AICE, CAPE, Dual Enrollment, etc.) before they must officially declare a major. The Exploratory Curriculum advisors assist students with decision-making and course selection while exploring their degree/major options.

During your time in ECM, you will focus on satisfying the USF General Education (Gen. Ed.) requirements, which are needed for any major at USF. These courses are a great way to learn and discover career fields and academic disciplines that may be unfamiliar to you. In addition, Exploratory Curriculum students are required to complete the ECM U-Decide version of IDS2378, Foundations of Interdisciplinary Knowledge and Inquiry, in their first Fall or Spring semester. *Under a state law that took effect July 1, 2026, ownership of the land and buildings on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus transferred to New College of Florida, and new students are no longer being admitted to USF Sarasota-Manatee. USF’s academic programs in that region are continuing for currently enrolled students through a structured teach-out plan that can last up to four years. The length of the teach-out will vary by program based on student demand. Detailed information is available on a website that includes an FAQ page, which is updated regularly.
