Leading by example: Dr. Jeremy Corrigan's journey to national recognition

Growing up in Tok, Alaska, a town of fewer than 1,000 people, Dr. Jeremy Corrigan never imagined his path would lead him to national recognition as a public health leader. Today, the USF College of Public Health (COPH) alumnus serves as laboratory director for the San Diego County Public Health Laboratory and is the recipient of the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) LEAD Award, honoring his leadership, advocacy and commitment to strengthening the public health workforce.

It has been nearly 25 years since Al Sommer and Mohammed Akhter called for public health to become a profession and 20 years since that call was answered with the creation of the National Board of Public Health Examiners. Since the first Certified in Public Health (CPH) exam was offered in 2008, more than 14 000 people have earned a CPH, including those with and without public health degrees from all over the world.
