  • Blake Simmons
    Dr. Blake Simmons is an Environmental Social Scientist at the Tampa Bay Estuary Program. His research focuses on the human dimensions of conservation, using tools from the fields of ecology, psychology, economics, and political science to understand how people make environmental decisions and design social marketing campaigns that lead to pro-environmental behaviour change. Dr. Simmons completed a B.S. in Biology and Ecosystem Science & Policy at the University of Miami in Florida, a M.S. in Biodiversity Conservation at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, and a Ph.D. in Conservation Science at the University of Queensland in Australia. He previously held postdoc positions at Boston University and Colorado State University, and taught environmental decision-making at Harvard University.

  • Amy Ewald
    Amy Ewald, MS is a Clinical Research Manager at Retina Vitreous Associates of Florida, a private retinal-ophthalmology practice in Saint Petersburg. Her research focuses on retinal diseases in the eyes and their treatments, including injectables both in the eye and subcutaneously, oral pills, gene therapy, and surgical interventions. Amy completed her bachelor's of science in psychology and microbiology at the University of Florida while doing research in neuroscience, neuropsychology, and immunology labs. She completed her master's in biomedical research at the °µÍøTV while researching further immunology-thyroid related diseases. She began working at Retina Vitreous Associates after college and helped grow the flourishing clinical research program that it is today.

  • Susie Paterson
    Dr. Susie Paterson is the Director of Research, Evaluation, and Learning at the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, where she leads initiatives focused on staff learning, evaluation of community investments, and research advancing health equity. A trained community psychologist, Dr. Paterson is especially passionate about participatory research practices and creating collaborative learning environments. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Smith College, her M.A. in Community Social Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and her Ph.D. in Community Well-Being from the University of Miami

  • Clinton Arhelger
    Clinton Arhelger is the Senior Director of the National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC), a standalone department within Florida International University’s (FIU) Office of Research & Economic Development (ORED). Operating in the Tampa Bay area, his department focuses on specialized workforce development, sensor and technology research, testing and evaluation, and laboratory services nationally and internationally for both the law enforcement community and the defense sector. He also serves as the Industry Liaison Officer for the Center for Advanced Research in Forensic Science (CARFS), which serves as a platform to conduct interdisciplinary and innovative research to address the needs of the forensic science laboratory community. Mr. Arhelger is a retired U.S. Army veteran where he focused on Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear & Weapons of Mass Destruction (CBRN-WMD) and U.S. Special Operations Command Biometric, Exploitation, and Forensic Intelligence programs. Since his retirement, he has completed his B.A. in Management at American Military University and is continuing his studies in the Florida International University Professional Master of Business Administration program.

All students and student teams that were engaged in SSEP experiment design and proposal writing of the finalist proposals or flight experiments—across the last 4 SSEP flight opportunities (SSEP Missions 18 through 21 to ISS)—are wholeheartedly invited to attend with their teachers and school administrators, and their families. The conference provides a formal gathering place where students present on their experiment designs, and those teams that flew experiments report results.
